Classic (EDS I and II)
  • Velvety or "doughy" texture
  • Stretchy
  • Fragile, easily injured, slow to heal
  • Wide scars from past cuts or injuries
  • Loose, flexible
  • Fatigue
  • Hernias (weak spots in organ walls that can cause a lump or bulge)
  • Heart problems
  • Soft lumps on the elbows or knees
  • Small bumps on the sides of the feet
  • Pregnancy-related problems
Hypermobility (EDS III)
  • Soft, smooth, mildly stretchy
  • Not usually fragile
  • Loose, flexible (including the spine)
  • Frequent dislocations (popping out of place)
  • Chronic pain in the joints
  • Heart problems
  • Digestive problems
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness upon standing
Vascular (EDS IV)
  • Thin, bruises easily
  • Large joints (elbows, knees) usually normal
  • Small joints (fingers, toes) might be somewhat loose or flexible
  • Tear in a blood vessel or organ wall – This can cause internal bleeding and be life-threatening
  • Pregnancy-related problems
There are 6 main types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome ("EDS"). This table lists the 3 most common, and some of the features often seen in each. Not every person will have the exact same symptoms. The other 3 main types of EDS are called "kyphoscoliosis EDS," "arthrochalasia EDS," and "dermatosparaxis EDS." These are less common than the types listed above. In addition, there are also a few other forms of EDS. But these are extremely rare.
