Orally disintegrating (also known as orodispersible) tablets and films are designed to dissolve rapidly in saliva and provide a useful alternative to pills for patients with non-severe swallowing difficulties. The tablet or film is dissolved on top of the tongue and can be taken without water. This method of administration requires swallowing of dissolved pharmaceutical for adequate absorption and is not appropriate for use in patients with severe dysphagia.
This is not an exhaustive list of orally disintegrating medications. For additional information including indications, dosage, and precautions, refer to the relevant clinical topics and drug monographs included within UpToDate.ODT: orally disintegrating tablet.
