Alcohol-associated fatty liver

Alcohol-associated fatty liver
Severe steatosis, macrovesicular type. Hepatocytes containing fat vacuoles are present throughout the lobule, even those hepatocytes adjacent to the portal tract (right side of the photo). Macrovesicular steatosis is characterized by a single large vacuole occupying the entire hepatocyte and thereby pushing the nucleus to the edge of the cell. Macrovesicular steatosis can also be seen in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
