The time necessary to apply pressure will vary with the degree of bleeding. In general, 2 to 5 minutes should be sufficient to achieve hemostasis. The highly porous sponge structure absorbs blood and wound exudate. The collagen component causes aggregation of platelets which bind to collagen fibrils. The aggregated platelets degranulate, releasing coagulation factors that promote the formation of fibrin.
