The Thompson Achilles squeeze test can be performed with the patient's feet hanging over the edge of the examining table. When the examiner squeezes the calf muscle, on the uninjured side there is normal plantar flexion of the ankle; on the side with a complete Achilles tendon rupture, there is no plantar flexion. It is important to note that in patients with a significant but incomplete rupture of the tendon, the patient may still demonstrate a normal squeeze test, as well as substantial strength with ankle plantar flexion.
