Regulation of secretin release

Regulation of secretin release
Schematic representation of the regulation of secretin release.
  1. Duodenal acidification causes release of secretin releasing factor (SRF) from the proximal small bowel.
  2. Secretin releasing factor elaborates secretin from specialized enteroendocrine cells (S cells) of the small intestine.
  3. Secretin is secreted into the blood and binds to specific secretin receptors on the pancreas to cause exocrine pancreatic secretion.
  4. Pancreatic exocrine secretion includes pancreatic proteases, which terminate secretin release by degrading secretin-releasing factor.
