Schematic representation of the steps involved in thyroid-stimulating hormone action
Mode of action of TSH. The biologically active TSH consisting of 2 subunits, alpha and beta, binds to the extracellular domain of the TSHR to activate the G proteins. This results in the production of cAMP. The latter mediates most action of TSH.
TSH: thyroid-stimulating hormone; TSHR: thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor; cAMP: cyclic adenosine monophosphate; T4: thyroxine.
