Examination for abnormal midface motion
To assess mid-face instability, grasp the superior anterior teeth (or alveolar ridge if teeth are absent) between the thumb and index finger and attempt to move the maxilla anteriorly and posteriorly. There is no motion in the uninjured mid-face. Gloves should be worn when performing this maneuver.
