Algorithm for evaluation of asymptomatic proteinuria in children

Algorithm for evaluation of asymptomatic proteinuria in children
Refer to UpToDate topics on the evaluation of proteinuria in children for further details.

BUN: blood urea nitrogen; C3: complement component 3; C4: complement component 4; HIV: human immunodeficiency virus.

* For children between 6 and 24 months, the threshold value is 0.5 mg protein to mg creatinine.

¶ Persistent proteinuria, elevated blood pressure, and kidney function impairment (elevated serum creatinine) are suggestive of kidney parenchymal damage. Such patients should be referred to a pediatric nephrologist (or a clinician with expertise in the care of children with kidney disease).
