Rheumatic mitral regurgitation

The short axis view during diastole (D) shows a mildly stenotic mitral orifice (MVO) by area (4 cm²), which presented no significant obstruction to mitral inflow. The valve is shown during systole in the lower panel (arrows). The medial side of the valve has failed to coapt; in rheumatic mitral regurgitation, failure of coaptation of this degree is usually associated with significant mitral regurgitation.
