Flail mitral valve

Flail mitral valve
The four chamber view from a 2-D echocardiogram shows a flail posterior mitral valve leaflet which has exaggerated motion in diastole and prolapses into the left atrium during systole. There is a bright echo seen at the tip of the valve, suggesting papillary muscle rupture as the etiology. Enlargement of the left atrium and ventricle is present, suggesting significant mitral regurgitation.
