Pulmonary osteoarthropathy

This plain film of the hand in a 41-year-old female who presented with severe hand and ankle pain demonstrates marked periosteal new bone formation adjacent to the first metacarpal bone (arrows). A chest radiograph revealed a large solitary mass subsequently shown to represent an adenocarcinoma.
