The patient should be positioned with a towel roll placed under the buttocks with the leg exernally rotated at the hip and flexed at the knee as shown. The femoral artery is palpated approximately midway between the symphysis pubis and superior iliac spine and punctured 2 cm below the inguinal ligament.
