Methimazole acts faster than PTU in Graves' hyperthyroidism

Methimazole acts faster than PTU in Graves' hyperthyroidism
Time required for patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism to become euthyroid (normal serum T4 and T3 concentrations) after therapy with methimazole (10 mg three times daily, n = 66) or PTU (100 mg three times daily, n = 17). The euthyroid state was achieved more quickly with methimazole (5.8 versus 16.8 weeks).
PTU: propylthiouracil; T4: thyroxine; T3: triiodothyronine.
