Uterine artery embolization for adenomyosis

Uterine artery embolization for adenomyosis

48-year-old female with heavy menstrual bleeding and dysmenorrhea. Sagittal T2-weighted MRI of the pelvis obtained:

(A) Before UAE demonstrates an enlarged uterus with diffuse thickening of the junctional zone and focal anterior uterine body involvement (arrow) compatible with adenomyosis.

(B) Three months following bilateral UAE demonstrates a decrease in junctional zone thickening and uterine size. The patient's symptoms improved significantly after the procedure.

MRI: magnetic resonance imaging; UAE: uterine artery embolization.
