Supplemental feeding systems for breastfeeding

Supplemental feeding systems for breastfeeding
In the setting of low milk production, which may include induced lactation and/or non-birth parent feeding, a supplemental feeding system can be used to give the infant supplemental milk at the breast/chest. The system consists of a small tube that extends to the tip of the nipple and is secured with tape or adhesive bandage. The other end of the tube is in a reservoir of milk (breast milk, donor milk, or infant formula). As the baby suckles at the breast, they consume the extra milk supplied by the tube. Similar to regular breast feeding, it is important that the baby is latched effectively and comfortably to the areola. An effective latch is important to remove any milk from the breast and to provide a signal to the parent's body to increase milk production.
