Fire ants floating on top of water during a flood

Fire ants floating on top of water during a flood
A fire ant colony floating in flood water on an "air-mattress" formed by the white larvae and pupae (called brood) underneath. The "mattress" is rapidly constructed by worker ants that may survive by floating on the water surface for several days or weeks.
