Initial airway management for tracheostomy tube displacement during anesthesia

Initial airway management for tracheostomy tube displacement during anesthesia
This algorithm shows initial management during anesthesia. For patients who require a new surgical airway or who have a tracheal tube placed in a tracheostomy that is <7 days old, a surgeon should be involved in management of the airway at the end of anesthesia.

SGA: supraglottic airway.

* Maturation of the tracheostomy tract occurs over several weeks. Tracheostomy tube replacement while the tract is immature increases the risk of complications, including placing the tube in pretracheal or peristomal tissue through a false passage.
