Risk assessment:
  • Category 1 – If failure occurs, major injury or death to patients, staff, or visitors is likely.
  • Category 2 – If failure occurs, minor injury to patients, staff, or visitors is likely.
  • Category 3 – If failure occurs, injuries are not likely, but minor discomfort to patients, staff, or visitors is likely.
  • Category 4 – If failure occurs, no impact to patients, staff, or visitors would occur.
Education
All persons working in the surgical environment should receive training regarding OR fire prevention and management.
Fire drills
Periodic fire drills should be held in the OR, with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff all involved, as well as the hospital's fire marshall.
Availability of appropropriate fire extinguishers:
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • FE-36 extinguisher
  • Water mist AC-rated extinguisher
Avoid dry chemical extinguishers and halon extinguishers
