Indications for field removal of helmet and shoulder pads in the athlete with suspected cervical spine injury*

Indications for field removal of helmet and shoulder pads in the athlete with suspected cervical spine injury*
Motion restriction of the helmet does not immobilize the head (ie, if the helmet and chin strap do not hold the head securely).
Poorly fitting shoulder pads prevent proper spinal motion restriction.
For athletes with respiratory compromise, the field provider cannot control the airway or provide ventilation despite face mask removal.
Shoulder pads require removal to address multiple traumatic injuries.
The helmet prevents spinal motion restriction in an appropriate position for transport.
* Cervical spine injury should be suspected in any athlete who is unconscious, complains of neck pain, or has an abnormal neurologic examination.
