Categories of blood pressure in adults

Blood pressure category	Blood pressure measurements^*
Normal	SBP <120 mmHg and DBP <80 mmHg^¶
Elevated	SBP 120 to 129 mmHg and DBP <80 mmHg^¶
Hypertension
Stage 1	SBP 130 to 139 mmHg or DBP 80 to 89 mmHg^¶
Stage 2	SBP ≥140 mmHg or ≥90 mmHg^¶

DBP: diastolic blood pressure; SBP: systolic blood pressure.

* Using in-office blood pressure measurements, according to the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines.

¶ Individuals with SBP and DBP in 2 categories should be designated to the higher blood pressure category.
