Insulin is contained in a reservoir/cartridge in the pump, which is attached to tubing that connects to a cannula placed subcutaneously. The pump can be placed in a pocket or attached to clothing. The insulin pump can be used with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), which wirelessly transmits glucose data to a device-specific receiver, a smart phone, or the CGM receiver of the insulin pump. For some systems in which the CGM directly communicates with the pump, insulin delivery is partially controlled by an algorithm that uses parameters including CGM results and target glucose.
