For post-exposure prophylaxis, vaccines are administered in combination with antimicrobial prophylaxis regimens. These vaccine regimens are for individuals who did not receive pre-exposure vaccination. Refer to other UpToDate content for details on post-exposure prophylaxis in individuals who have already received anthrax vaccination.
If supplies of anthrax vaccine adsorbed (AVA) are limited, another option for post-exposure prophylaxis is anthrax vaccine adsorbed, adjuvanted (AVA-adjuvanted). It is administered as two intramuscular doses of 0.5 mL each, given at 0 and 2 weeks following exposure.* A dose-sparing regimen of anthrax vaccine adsorbed can be used if the supply is not sufficient to allow standard vaccination for all exposed individuals.
¶ Vaccine can be administered intramuscularly if subcutaneous administration poses significant challenges that might delay or preclude vaccination.Do you want to add Medilib to your home screen?
