For retrohepatic IVC injury, balloon occlusion may permit repair by providing temporary hemostasis in this challenging anatomic location. Patch repair is ideal for this IVC injury since primary repair of a large IVC tear is likely to narrow the lumen, which increases the risk for thrombosis.
