Spina bifida is a birth defect in which a baby's spine doesn't form normally. Babies with spina bifida have an opening in their back. The spinal cord and the covering around the spinal cord stick out of the opening, forming a sac. This drawing shows the most serious form of spina bifida, called "open spina bifida" or "myelomeningocele."
