The figure shows deployment of an aortic occlusion balloon in zone III. The REBOA catheter (blue) is placed through an access sheath (white). Shown is a dedicated device that does not require a long guidewire for placement; however, initial sheath placement is performed over a short guidewire. If this particular device is not available, any compliant aortic occlusion balloon can be inserted using the standard over-the-wire technique. The balloon may be immediately inflated if ongoing hemorrhage is a concern, or left in place deflated and inflated only if needed.
