In the United States, live virus vaccines are routinely recommended for protection against rotavirus, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella. Either inactivated or live attenuated influenza vaccine may be used for people 2 through 49 years of age. Oral poliovirus vaccine and live attenuated zoster vaccine are not available in the United States. Information about routinely recommended vaccines for other countries is available through the World Health Organization. Refer to the relevant UpToDate topic reviews for specific vaccine recommendations.
* For some pathogens, both live and non-live (eg, inactivated, recombinant) formulations are available.
