Capnogram with upsloping plateau

Capnogram with upsloping plateau
In patients with obstructive lung disease and an upsloping ETCO2 plateau, inspiration may occur before the true end of expiration, and result in a falsely low ETCO2 (solid line). Reducing the respiratory rate (or briefly stopping the ventilator) should allow full exhalation and an accurate ETCO2 reading (dashed line).
CO2: carbon dioxide; ETCO2: end-tidal carbon dioxide.
