This figures shows a capnogram during ventilation of a small child. With the rapid respiratory rate that is necessary in children, inspiration may occur before full expiration, and may give a falsely low end tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO₂) value (solid line). A brief ventilator pause allows full expiration and display of the true ETCO₂ (dashed line).
