- Identify yourself by name, title, and role.

- Listen without judgment. Be aware of body language.

- Communicate by asking appropriate questions sensitively.
|
- Have a medical assistant and/or the support person of the patient's choice.
|
- Describe the examination or procedure, the instruments to be used, and the rationale in as much detail as the patient would like.
|
- Use reassuring language (eg, "When you are ready and with your permission"). This gives the patient control and a chance to breathe deeply and assess their comfort and trust level.
|
- Never proceed unless permission is verbally granted, and stop immediately if requested to do so.
|
- Always stop if the patient withdraws, closes their legs, screams, or dissociates. If this occurs, do not attempt an examination again that day, unless specifically requested by the patient.
