Movement of thoracoscopic instrument in chest wall

The figures illustrate the limited movement between ribs in thick chest wall using standard video-assisted thoracoscopic instruments. An advantage of robotic surgery is that the robotic arm fulcrums the instrument around a fixed point. Once the trocars are in place, the thickness of the chest is less important for the mobility of the robotic instruments.
