Urticating spider hairs 1

Urticating spider hairs 1
When threatened, tarantulas dislodge small (about 1 mm long) barbed hairs at the posterior of their abdomens and launch them at their attacker. These urticating hairs, as well as airborne material from crushed tarantulas, may cause irritation if they come in contact with skin, eyes, or mucous membranes.
