State of the art: Intrapartum antibiotics in cesarean section, the infant microbiota and allergic diseases

Jassy Moore, Severine Navarro, Kate McCarthy, Ridwan B. Rashid, Simon Phipps, Akwasi Amoako, Leonie Callaway, Victoria Eley

doi : 10.1111/aogs.14577

With increasing rates of cesarean section worldwide and international guidelines advising pre-incision antibiotics, neonatal exposure to pre-birth antibiotics is higher than ever before. Emerging evidence has raised concern regarding the impact of such antibiotics on the neonatal intestinal microbiota, immune system development and health conditions later in life.

Long-term neurological morbidity among children delivered by vacuum extraction - a national cohort study

Hanna Ulfsdottir, Cecilia Ekéus, Kristina Tedroff, Katarina Ã…berg, Hans Järnbert-Pettersson

doi : 10.1111/aogs.14568

This is the first nationwide cohort study of vacuum extraction (VE) and long-term neurological morbidity. We hypothesized that VE per se, and not only complicated labor, can cause intracranial bleedings, which could further cause neurological long-term morbidity. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of neonatal mortality, cerebral palsy (CP), and epilepsy among children delivered by VE in a long-term perspective.

Implementation of universal umbilical cord pH analysis in Denmark. A national register-based study

Charlotte B. Andersson, Line Thellesen, Ulrik S. Kesmodel, Jesper P. Petersen, Søren P. Johnsen

doi : 10.1111/aogs.14572

Umbilical cord blood gas analysis provides information about intrapartum hypoxia and is considered an important measure of quality in maternity care. Universal measurement of umbilical cord pH (UC-pH), as part of umbilical cord blood gas analysis, has been recommended in Denmark since 2009. The recommendation is that UC-pH is measured from the umbilical cord artery (pHUA) and vein (pHUV). The aim of this study was to evaluate the national implementation of universal measurement of UC-pH.

Maria W. E. Frenken, Daisy A. A. Van Der Woude, Rik Vullings, Swan G. Oei, Judith O. E. H. Van Laar

doi : 10.1111/aogs.14571

Fetal electrocardiography (NI-fECG) and electrohysterography (EHG) have been proven more accurate and reliable than conventional non-invasive methods (doppler ultrasound and tocodynamometry) and are less affected by maternal obesity.

Gestational diabetes mellitus and time in active labor: A population-based cohort study

Sofia Nevander, Sara Carlhäll, Karin Källén, Caroline Lilliecreutz, Marie Blomberg

doi : 10.1111/aogs.14592

Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have higher rates of adverse perinatal outcomes compared with women without GDM, including an increased risk for having labor induced and for cesarean section. The findings from previous studies analyzing duration of labor in women with GDM are contradictory.

Comparison of ductus venosus Doppler and cerebroplacental ratio for the prediction of adverse perinatal outcome in high-risk pregnancies before and after 34 weeks

José Morales-Roselló, Rohan Bhate, Nashwa Eltaweel, Asma Khalil

doi : 10.1111/aogs.14570

The objective of the study was to compare the accuracy of the ductus venosus pulsatility index (DV PI) with that of the cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) for the prediction of adverse perinatal outcome at two gestational ages: <34 and ≥34 weeks' gestation.
