The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) is developed to overcome lead-related complications and systemic infections, inherent to transvenous ICD (TV-ICD) therapy. The PRAETORIAN trial demonstrated that the S-ICD is non-inferior to the TV-ICD with regard to the combined primary endpoint of inappropriate shocks and complications. This prespecified secondary analysis evaluates all complications in the PRAETORIAN trial.

Association of anti-Ro seropositivity with cardiac rhythm and conduction disturbances

Aviram Akuka, Niv Ben-Shabat, Abdulla Watad, Avishai M Tsur, Scott Ehrenberg, Dennis McGonagle, Doron Comaneshter, Roy Beinart, Arnon D Cohen, Howard Amital Author Notes

doi : 10.1093/eurheartj/ehac516

European Heart Journal, Volume 43, Issue 47, 14 December 2022, Pages 4912–4919

Anti-Ro/La autoantibodies are especially prevalent in autoimmune diseases but are also relatively frequent in healthy adults. Their arrhythmogenic effect on the immature cardiac conductive system is well established, with substantial evidence demonstrating an increased risk for congenital atrioventricular block in neonates of seropositive mothers.

European Heart Journal, Volume 43, Issue 47, 14 December 2022, Pages 4923–4930

At least 50% of deaths due to coronary artery disease (CAD) are sudden cardiac deaths (SCDs), but the role of acute plaque complications on the incidence of sudden death in CAD is somewhat unclear. The present study aimed to investigate plaque histology and concomitant myocardial disease in sudden coronary death.

doi : 10.1093/eurheartj/ehac558

European Heart Journal, Volume 43, Issue 47, 14 December 2022, Pages 4933–4942

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is now regarded as a preventable disease, requiring a search for modifiable risk factors. With legalization of cannabis and more lenient laws regarding the use of other illicit substances, investigation into the potential effects of methamphetamine, cocaine, opiate, and cannabis exposure on incident AF is needed.
