Factors Predisposing to Survival After Resuscitation for Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Santo Ricceri, James W. Salazar, Andrew A. Vu, Eric Vittinghoff, ... Zian H. Tseng

doi : 10.1016/j.jacc.2021.03.299

Volume 77, Issue 19, 18 May 2021, Pages 2353-2362

In the POST SCD study, the authors autopsied all World Health Organization (WHO)–defined sudden cardiac deaths (SCDs) and found that only 56% had an arrhythmic cause; resuscitated sudden cardiac arrests (SCAs) were excluded because they did not die suddenly. They hypothesized that causes underlying resuscitated SCAs would be similarly heterogeneous.

Lawrence A. Leiter, Deepak L. Bhatt, Darren K. McGuire, Hwee Teoh, ... Philippe Gabriel Steg

doi : 10.1016/j.jacc.2021.03.298

Volume 77, Issue 19, 18 May 2021, Pages 2366-2377

THEMIS (The Effect of Ticagrelor on Health Outcomes in Diabetes Mellitus Patients Intervention Study) (n = 19,220) and its pre-specified THEMIS-PCI (The Effect of Ticagrelor on Health Outcomes in Diabetes Mellitus Patients Intervention Study-Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) (n = 11,154) subanalysis showed, in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (median duration 10.0 years; HbA1c 7.1%) and stable coronary artery disease without prior myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke, that ticagrelor plus aspirin (compared with placebo plus aspirin) produced a favorable net clinical benefit (composite of all-cause mortality, MI, stroke, fatal bleeding, and intracranial bleeding) if the patients had a previous percutaneous coronary intervention.

Impact of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention on Outcomes in Patients With Heart Failure: JACC State-of-the-Art Review

Puja B. Parikh, Deepak L. Bhatt, Varun Bhasin, Stefan D. Anker, ... Javed Butler

doi : 10.1016/j.jacc.2021.03.310

Volume 77, Issue 19, 18 May 2021, Pages 2432-2447

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is highly prevalent in patients with heart failure (HF) and accounts for nearly two-thirds of cases. The use of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in HF patients with CAD has markedly increased and has been suggested to be associated with improved outcomes in numerous observational studies. Randomized data comparing the impact of PCI with that of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) or contemporary guideline-directed medical therapy alone on clinical outcomes and myocardial recovery in patients with HF are lacking.
