Prevalence of Open-angle Glaucoma in the Faroese Population

Holm, Elin MD*; Holm, Malan MD*; Vilhelmsen, Kaj MD*; Andorsdottir, Gudrid PhD†; Vorum, Henrik MD, PhD‡; Simpson, Allie MD§; Roos, Benjamin R. BS§; Fingert, John H. MD, PhD§; Rosenberg, Thomas MD?

February 2022 - Volume 31 - Issue 2 - p 72-78

The Faroe Islands are home to 50,000 genetically isolated people in the North Atlantic. The prevalence of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in the Faroese population is unknown. Consequently, we conducted a survey to determine the prevalence of OAG in the Faroese population. We also investigated the role of known glaucoma-causing genes in Faroese OAG.

February 2022 - Volume 31 - Issue 2 - p 84-90

Compared with normal subjects with similar shallow anterior chamber depth (ACD), patients with primary angle closure disease (PACD) had narrower angle structures measured by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) at 250??m from scleral spur (very root of iris), especially along oblique and vertical axis.

Effect of Postoperative Trimming of the Tube Portion of Ahmed Glaucoma Valve on Corneal Endothelial Cell Loss

Lee, Ko Eun MD; Sung, Kyung Rim MD, PhD; Shin, Joong Won MD

doi : 10.1097/IJG.0000000000001919

February 2022 - Volume 31 - Issue 2 - p 102-108

We reduced the tube length through a small limbal incision in eyes that underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation and found that the rate of corneal endothelial cell (CEC) density was markedly reduced from ?12.2% per year to ?3.5% per year after this simple procedure.

Risk Factors for Corneal Striae in Eyes After Glaucoma Surgery

Birnbaum, Faith A. MD*; Mirzania, Delaram MD*; Swaminathan, Swarup S. MD†; Davis, Andrew R. MD*; Perez, Victor L. MD*; Herndon, Leon W. MD*

doi : 10.1097/IJG.0000000000001888

February 2022 - Volume 31 - Issue 2 - p 116-122

Eyes with corneal striae had steeper cornea, induced astigmatism, and higher corneal hysteresis (CH), which implies a relationship between striae, corneal shape, and the cornea’s resistance to deformation at low intraocular pressures (IOPs).

Corneal Endothelial Changes in Patients With Primary Congenital Glaucoma

Tamçelik, Nevbahar MD*; Batu Oto, Bilge MD*; Mergen, Burak MD†; Kiliçarslan, O?uzhan MD*; Gönen, Busenur MD*; Arici, Ceyhun MD*

February 2022 - Volume 31 - Issue 2 - p 123-128

Specular microscopic parameters were found to be decreased in patients with primary congenital glaucoma (PCG). Patients with PCG and Haab striae had lower endothelial cell density (ECD) and central corneal thickness (CCT) than those without Haab striae did. The type of surgery (viscogoniotomy, viscotrabeculotomy, or combined viscotrabeculotomy and trabeculectomy) did not affect specular microscopic parameters.

Eye color is the latest physical attribute to be subject to alteration for cosmetic reasons. We report a rare case of bilateral secondary pigment dispersion following laser burns to the irises for cosmetic purposes. This case demonstrates a case of secondary pigment dispersion not previously reported in the literature to the best of our knowledge.
