Osita Ezenwosu, Barth Chukwu, Ifeyinwa Ezenwosu, Ndubuisi Uwaezuoke, Christopher Eke, Maria Udorah, Chinedu Idoko, Anthony Ikefuna & Ifeoma Emodi

doi : 10.1186/s12887-021-03015-1

BMC Pediatrics volume 21, Article number: 533 (2021)

Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is the commonest monogenic haematologic disorder resulting from the inheritance of homozygous mutant haemoglobin genes from both parents. Some factors have been identified as important in explaining the variability in depression in sickle cell anaemia (SCA). Information on this is limited in a resource-limited setting like Nigeria. This study aims to determine factors which influence depression in children and adolescents with sickle cell anaemia in a resource-limited setting.

Developing practical clinical tools for predicting neonatal mortality at a neonatal intensive care unit in Tanzania

Dory Kovacs, Delfina R. Msanga, Stephen E. Mshana, Muhammad Bilal, Katarina Oravcova & Louise Matthews

doi : 10.1186/s12887-021-03012-4

BMC Pediatrics volume 21, Article number: 537 (2021)

Neonatal mortality remains high in Tanzania at approximately 20 deaths per 1000 live births. Low birthweight, prematurity, and asphyxia are associated with neonatal mortality; however, no studies have assessed the value of combining underlying conditions and vital signs to provide clinicians with early warning of infants at risk of mortality. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors (including vital signs) associated with neonatal mortality in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Bugando Medical Centre (BMC), Mwanza, Tanzania; to identify the most accurate generalised linear model (GLM) or decision tree for predicting mortality; and to provide a tool that provides clinically relevant cut-offs for predicting mortality that is easily used by clinicians in a low-resource setting.

Recently, genome-wide association studies have led to the identification of novel mutations associated with LGS. The TANC2 gene, encodes a synaptic scaffolding protein that interacts with other proteins at the postsynaptic density to regulate dendritic spines and excitatory synapse formation. The TANC2 gene mutations were reported in neurodevelopmental disorders and epilepsy but not in LGS ever.

Globally, antibiotic resistance (ABR) has been increasingly challenging neonatal sepsis treatment, with 26 to 84% of gram-negative bacteria resistant to third-generation cephalosporins. In sub-Saharan Africa, limited evidence is available regarding the neonatal microbiology and ABR. To our knowledge, no studies have assessed neonatal bacterial infections and ABR in Central-African Republic (CAR). Therefore, this study aimed to describe the pathogens isolated and their specific ABR among patients with suspected antibiotic-resistant neonatal infection admitted in a CAR neonatal unit.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of AM and its associated factors among preschool children in Rajshahi district, Bangladesh.

A rare case of fetus in fetu in the sacrococcygeal region: CT and MRI findings

Tao Lu, Junmei Ma & Xudan Yang

doi : 10.1186/s12887-021-03063-7

BMC Pediatrics volume 21, Article number: 575 (2021)

Socio-demographic and environmental risk factors associated with multiple under-five child loss among mothers in Bangladesh

Rasel Kabir, Marwa Farag, Hyun Ja Lim, Nigatu Geda & Cindy Feng

doi : 10.1186/s12887-021-03034-y

BMC Pediatrics volume 21, Article number: 576 (2021)

Despite the substantial decline in child mortality globally over the last decade, reducing neonatal and under-five mortality in Bangladesh remains a challenge. Mothers who experienced multiple child losses could have substantial adverse personal and public health consequences. Hence, prevention of child loss would be extremely desirable during women’s reproductive years. The main objective of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with multiple under-five child loss from the same mother in Bangladesh.

doi : 10.1186/s12887-021-03068-2

BMC Pediatrics volume 21, Article number: 577 (2021)

The most critical concern for the management of childhood intussusception is bowel resection due to intestinal ischemia and necrosis. The early prediction of this problem is of great importance. We investigated the value of various combinations of inflammatory factors to predict intestinal necrosis and resection.

Genetic testing is necessary for correct diagnosis and treatment in patients with isolated methylmalonic aciduria: a case report

Katarína Brennerová, Martina Škopková, Mária Ostrožlíková, Jana Šaligová, Juraj Staník, Vladimír Bzdúch & Daniela Gašperíková

doi : 10.1186/s12887-021-03067-3

BMC Pediatrics volume 21, Article number: 578 (2021)

Isolated methylmalonic aciduria can be caused by pathogenic mutations in the gene for methylmalonyl-CoA mutase or in the genes encoding enzymes involved in the intracellular metabolism of cobalamin. Some of these mutations may be cobalamin responsive. The type of methylmalonic aciduria cannot always be assumed from clinical manifestation and the responsiveness to cobalamin has to be assessed for appropriate cobalamin administration, or to avoid unnecessary treatment. The cases presented herein highlight the importance of genetic testing in methylmalonic aciduria cases and the need for standardisation of the in vivo cobalamin-responsiveness assessment.

Autoimmune pancreatitis, sialadenitis, dacryoadenitis and retroperitoneal fibrosis are the most frequent manifestations. IgG4-related sialadenitis usually affects submandibular glands and is very rare in children.

Intussusception in preterm neonates: A systematic review of a rare condition

Mostafa Kotb, Mostafa Abdelatty, Hayssam Rashwan, Yasmine AbdelMeguid & Ahmed Elrouby

doi : 10.1186/s12887-021-03065-5

BMC Pediatrics volume 21, Article number: 587 (2021)

While necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a prevalent condition in preterm neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), intussusception is exceedingly uncommon and often overlooked. This is due to the fact that they share many clinical characteristics. The initial misdiagnosis of intussusception in preterm neonates (IPN) especially has led to a delay in their management, which increases the risk of developing compromised bowel. Additionally, it is difficult to reach a diagnosis as neonatal intussusception does not have any classical radiological signs even when contrast enema is used. This systematic review is based on the published literature including case reports and case series to review the clinical features of IPN and how to differentiate it from NEC in order to shed the light on this rare disease and how having a high index of suspicion would help practitioners to make an early and accurate diagnosis

Case Report : Li-Fraumeni Syndrome with Central Nervous System Tumors in Two Siblings

Zishi Fang, Yan Su, Hailang Sun, Ming Ge, Zhan Qi, Chanjuan Hao, Suyun Qian & Xiaoli Ma

doi : 10.1186/s12887-021-03070-8

BMC Pediatrics volume 21, Article number: 588 (2021)

Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a rare autosomal dominant cancer predisposition syndrome caused by germline TP53 gene mutations. It is characterized by high risk of early-onset cancer, and has been confirmed as associated with multiple tumors clinically. So pediatricians should be more alert to LFS in children with tumors. Choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) is a rare, malignant tumor which account for less than 1% of all central nervous system (CNS) tumors. However, when such tumorigenesis occurs, it is important to be vigilant for the presence of LFS.
