Volar Plate Fixation Versus Cast Immobilization in Acceptably Reduced Intra-Articular Distal Radial Fractures

Selles, C.A. MD1,2,a; Mulders, M.A.M. MD, PhD1; Winkelhagen, J. MD3; van Eerten, P.V. MD4; Goslings, J.C. MD, PhD5; Schep, N.W.L. MD, PhD2;  the VIPAR Collaborators

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.20.01344

November 3, 2021 - Volume 103 - Issue 21 - p 1963-1969

The evidence for the treatment of acceptably reduced intra-articular distal radial fractures remains inconclusive. We therefore compared the functional outcomes of cast immobilization (nonoperative) and volar plate fixation (operative) for patients with these fractures.

Cost Analysis of Volar Plate Fixation Versus Plaster Cast Immobilization for Intra-Articular Distal Radial Fractures

Selles, C.A. MD1,2,a; Mulders, M.A.M. MD, PhD1; van Dieren, S. PhD1; Goslings, J.C. MD, PhD3; Schep, N.W.L. MD, PhD2;  the VIPAR Collaborators

Capsular Repair During Hip Arthroscopy Demonstrates Restoration of Axial Distraction Resistance in an in Vivo Intraoperative Testing Model

O’Neill, Dillon C. MD1; Tomasevich, Kelly M. BA1; Mortensen, Alexander J. MD2; Featherall, Joseph MD1; Ohlsen, Suzanna M. BS2; Aoki, Stephen K. MD1,a

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.20.01932

November 3, 2021 - Volume 103 - Issue 21 - p 1977-1985

Cadaveric models demonstrate that failure of hip capsular repair is dependent on the robustness of the repair construct. In vivo data on capsular repair construct efficacy are limited. We investigated the effect of a figure-of-8 capsular repair on hip distraction resistance relative to native and post-capsulotomy states. We hypothesized that an unrepaired capsulotomy would demonstrate increased axial distraction compared with the native state and that capsular repair would restore distraction resistance to native levels.

November 3, 2021 - Volume 103 - Issue 21 - p 1986-1995

In 2010, 2 authors of this current study reported the results of Ponseti treatment compared with primary posteromedial release (PMR) for congenital talipes equinovarus in a cohort of 51 prospective patients. This current study shows outcomes recorded at a median of 15 years after the original treatment.

Allograft Chip Incorporation in Acetabular Reconstruction

Butscheidt, Sebastian MD1,2; von Kroge, Simon MSc2; Stürznickel, Julian MD1,2; Beil, Frank Timo MD, MBA1; Gehrke, Thorsten MD3; Püschel, Klaus MD4; Amling, Michael MD, MBA2; Hahn, Michael PhD2; Rolvien, Tim MD, PhD, MBA1,2,a

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.20.01943

November 3, 2021 - Volume 103 - Issue 21 - p 1996-2005

Impacted bone-grafting with morselized allograft chips is commonly used to reconstruct acetabular bone defects in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). While the overall clinical outcome of this procedure is described to be excellent, the microstructural basis and histological determinants of allograft incorporation remained to be further elucidated.

Use of an Angled Blade Plate for 31A3 Intertrochanteric Fractures

Varghese, Viju Daniel MS(Orthopaedics)1; Bhowmick, Kaushik MS(Orthopaedics)1,*; Ramasamy, Boopalan MS(Orthopaedics)1; Karuppusami, Reka MSc(Biostatistics)2; Jepegnanam, Thilak Samuel MS(Orthopaedics)1

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.19.01265

November 3, 2021 - Volume 103 - Issue 21 - p 2006-2013

A subgroup of pertrochanteric fractures—namely, the AO/OTA 31A3 fracture—continues to be a difficult problem to treat, even with cephalomedullary nails. We present the results for 26 patients with a 31A3 fracture treated with the angled blade plate.

Thoracic Morphology and Bronchial Narrowing Are Related to Pulmonary Function in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

Farrell, James PhD1,2,a; Garrido, Enrique MD, EBOT3; Vavruch, Ludvig MD, PhD4,5; Schlösser, Tom P.C. MD, PhD3,6

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.20.01714

November 3, 2021 - Volume 103 - Issue 21 - p 2014-2023

In adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), lung function impairment is not necessarily related to the coronal spinal deformity. Recently, right-sided bronchial narrowing has been reported in thoracic AIS. The aim of this study was to describe the relation of chest and spinal deformity parameters, bronchial narrowing, and lung volumes with pulmonary function in preoperative AIS.

Heated Tobacco Products Impair Cell Viability, Osteoblastic Differentiation, and Bone Fracture-Healing

Nishino, Kazuya MD1; Tamai, Koji MD, PhD1,a; Orita, Kumi PhD1; Hashimoto, Yusuke MD, PhD1; Nakamura, Hiroaki MD, PhD1

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.20.02227

November 3, 2021 - Volume 103 - Issue 21 - p 2024-2031

The negative impact of cigarette smoking on bone union has been well documented. However, the impact of heated tobacco product (HTP) use on bone fracture-healing remains unclear. The present study investigated the effect of HTPs on preosteoblast viability, osteoblastic differentiation, and fracture-healing and compared the effects with those of conventional combustible cigarettes.

Association Between Same-Day Discharge Total Joint Arthroplasty and Risk of 90-Day Adverse Events in Patients with ASA Classification of ?3

Reddy, Nithin C. MD1; Prentice, Heather A. PhD2; Paxton, Elizabeth W. PhD2; Hinman, Adrian D. MD3; Lin, Abraham G. MD4; Navarro, Ronald A. MD5

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.20.02110

November 3, 2021 - Volume 103 - Issue 21 - p 2032-2044

Although safety in same-day discharge total joint arthroplasty (TJA) has been reported, findings are limited to healthier patients, specific surgeons, and/or specific institutions. Indications for same-day discharge TJA have expanded to include patients with multiple comorbidities; however, safety in this specific patient population remains unknown. Therefore, we sought to compare the risk of 90-day adverse events in higher-risk patients undergoing same-day discharge versus inpatient TJA.
