A Close Look at the Clinical Efficacy of Rho-Associated Protein Kinase Inhibitor Eye Drops for Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy

Kinoshita, Shigeru MD, PhD*; Colby, Kathryn A. MD, PhD†; Kruse, Friedrich E. MD, PhD‡

doi : 10.1097/ICO.0000000000002642

October 2021 - Volume 40 - Issue 10 - p 1225-1228

The current understanding on the clinical efficacy of Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) inhibitor for treating Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy is summarized to clarify whether the “off-label” ROCK-inhibitor eye-drop application are appropriate. ROCK-inhibitor eye drops may eventually be deemed a cutting-edge therapy for Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy patients with acute corneal endothelial defect.

Supply and Demand of Domestic Corneal Tissue and Its Implications on Export Potential—Using Australia as an Example

Machin, Heather RN, MBA*; Buckland, Lisa GCQM†; Georges, Pierre MScMed‡; Ghabcha, Mona BMedSc‡; Golding-Holbrook, Tamme BMSc, SCEB§; Leighton, Candice BSc, CTBS¶; Mackey, Adrienne BSc, GCPH?,**; Weinel, Luke BHSc (Hons)§; Whiting, Victoria BApplSci¶; Sutton, Gerard MBBS, FRANZCO PhD‡,††,‡‡; Baird, Paul N. PhD**

doi : 10.1097/ICO.0000000000002599

October 2021 - Volume 40 - Issue 10 - p 1229-1235

Corneal tissue importation is only possible if another country is able to export corneas without impacting its own domestic demand. Currently, there is little evidence to indicate whether export nations have such surplus capacity and in a position to export. To explore this concept, we examined our nation, Australia, which is reported to routinely decline donations because of its ability to meet domestic corneal transplant demand. Our research offers insights and opportunities for Australia and other nations to evaluate their domestic and international supply and allocation of corneal tissue in this space.

Efficacy of Long-term Use of 0.3% Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drops for Traumatic Corneal Abrasion: A Randomized Controlled, Pilot Trial

Wei, Menghuan MD Candidate; Zou, Yingshi MD Candidate; Duan, Fang PhD; Ding, Xiaohu PhD; Zhuang, Jiejie BSc; Deng, Jiayu BSc; Yuan, Zhaohui PhD

doi : 10.1097/ICO.0000000000002625

October 2021 - Volume 40 - Issue 10 - p 1248-1252

Traumatic corneal abrasion (TCA) causes damage to both corneal epithelium and the underlying hemidesmosomal junctions. Delayed recovery of hemidesmosomal junctions causes symptomatic episodes. However, there is no recommended treatment for recovery of hemidesmosomal junctions, indicating that a blank period exists in TCA treatment. In this study, the efficacy of long-term use of sodium hyaluronate on recovery of hemidesmosomal junctions during the blank period in TCA healing was investigated.
